DULUTH — It was a day of fun in the sun at Park Point Beach as beach-goers laid in the sand, played in the water and tested their safety knowledge as part of Duluth Parks and Recreation's beach party and water safety awareness event Wednesday.

The event, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Park Point Public Beach House, featured activities, pop-up play equipment, spinning wheel and prizes.

"Lake Superior is a lot of fun, but there are also a lot of things you need to be aware of to swim responsibly," said Marcy Dammann, recreation instructor with Duluth Parks and Recreation.

Staff members discussed rip currents with visitors. An information display set up next to a tent near the beach house.

"Looking for rip currents and understanding rip currents," said Dammann. "They (kids) have had a lot of fun just looking at the pictures that we brought out."

It was the third of three beach parties this summer organized by Duluth Parks and Recreation.

Historically, Duluth Parks and Recreation has held a sand modeling contest, but post-COVID 19, they decided to change it up a bit and instead of one day, have three community event-based days to provide outreach.
