Commissioners approve proposing small property tax increase

NEW BOSTON, Texas -- In a 5-to-1 vote, Bowie County Commissioners agreed to propose a slight property tax increase during their second monthly meeting Monday.

The proposal is to increase the rate from 4.24322 cents per $100 valuation on real property to 4.24875 cents.

Precinct 2 Commissioner Tom Whitten voted against the measure.

A public hearing on the proposed rate is scheduled for 9 a.m. Aug. 29 inside the Commissioners Court meeting room at the courthouse.

Commissioners also officially approved holding the Nov. 8 general election with 22 polling locations throughout the county. Bowie County Judge Bobby Howell said the election will be the first that allows voters to go to any polling place they choose.

In other business, the court --

• approved an interlocal agreement with Pleasant Grove Independent School District and Texarkana ISD to hold school board elections along with the general election.

• approved 22 presiding and 22 alternate judges for the Nov. 8 election and eight presiding and eight alternate judges for early voting.

• approved early voting at eight locations, with Bowie County Courthouse as the main location.

• approved using $174,870 in American Rescue Plan funds to purchase a 2022 John Deere wheel loader.

• tabled action on accepting a $299,451 bid from Ledwell and Son Enterprises to sell a dump truck to the Precinct 1 Road Department.
